Wine Fiction: Dark Vineyard by Martin Walker

I thought recently I'd expand my feel for the wine game by having a look at a few novels, to see what sort of wine-related fiction is out there for oenophile reader. So to kick off, I picked up this little page-turner that promised to give the reader a bit of mystery in "la France profonde."

The plot revolves around the goings-on in a tiny rural village in the Dordogne, where it seems an outbreak of Eco-terrorism may be about to consume the locals and their sleepy valley. Into this marches local Police Chief, Bruno Courrèges, who, as well as hunting, cooking, and coaching the kiddies' rugby team, keeps a firm finger on his community's pulse.

A huge multinational wine company is looking longingly at the valley's untapped winemaking heritage and (so far) cheap land values for their next shiny mega-winery, and there is some good, thought-provoking material here on whether the new jobs promised might be good for such a tiny hamlet, or whether something more than land gets sold off when big producers move in. Some themes run throughout the book that would be familiar to many of us involved in Aussie winemaking.

There are plenty of mouth-watering food and wine moments throughout, well-rounded characters, and it's easy to see this would have been great fun for hard-nosed business and political journo Martin Walker to write, presumably on or inspired by his yearly sojourn in the Dordogne.

It's great fun to read, and I look forward to hooking into some of the others in the Bruno Courrèges series... Keep an eye out for them!

A quick note to wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR from the Mitchell Harris Crew.

Thanks for a terrific year in 2010, a year where:

• We were lucky to have a brilliant vintage in the Pyrenees, truly one to remember for our red wine. 
• We discovered a great blend of fruit zing and savoury tannins in our 2010 Pinot Noir/Sangiovese Rosé.
• The addition of a terrific aged Muscat to the Mitchell Harris Wines portfolio
• Mitchell Harris Wines moved into even more of Melbourne and Victoria's best restaurants and bars.
• We continued to gain some great reviews in the press and blogs, and achieved James Halliday's Wine Companion 5-star status in only our second year.

The fun won't stop this year, with plans ahead for:

• A promising Pyrenees vintage, with our fruit in the Moonambel Hills surviving our spring deluges without wet feet or any other problems.
• Mitchell Harris Footy Tipping, bigger and better than ever!
• Sabre by Mitchell Harris, the release of our long-awaited sparkling wine.
• Plenty of events and great drinking ahead.

The Age Epicure Review - Mitchell Harris Pyrenees Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

After a winter of our Cabernet being snapped up into restaurants all over town, we've finally hit the broadsheets with its first press review in today's (21st July 2009) Epicure section of The Age.

We're rapt with the review by Ralph Kyte-Powell, albeit they put the wrong bottle shot (!) next to it!

Mitchell Harris Pyrenees Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 $20-$22

Made using organically grown grapes from Victoria's Pyrenees, the experience of John Harris in Victorian wineries shows. Blackcurrant, mulberry, dark chocolate and light minty aromas. The medium-bodied palate has silky texture, subtle savoury flavour and fine-grained tannins.

(13.5 per cent alcohol; screw cap)

Ageing? Drink over four years.

Food ideas Lamb cutlets; Vietnamese mint-wrapped beef.
